About The Event

Training from NWCH

Mary Corkish has 20+ years’ experience as a practicing counsellor and counselling lecturer. Her depth of knowledge brings training to life, making it memorable and easy to understand, but mainly – incredibly useful!

Mary Corkish (BA Hons; RMBACP). Mary is a highly experienced FE & HE lecturer in counselling. Of Irish Celtic heritage, Mary has a passion for the narrative, the tale, the story of the lived experience of an individual being brought to life, to be told, to be heard. It is this passion that informs her teaching & training. Of counselling, Mary speaks of its potential for opening-up new perspectives to life situations, to challenge current thinking, to change mind-sets to be a place where one can develop an ability to ‘look wider’, to allow ‘new ways of being and doing to emerge out of….’. She says “my Northern Irish heritage has given me a ‘lived experience’ of division and conflict, of being different, and exploring challenge and forgiveness in the process of reconciliation and restoration, both in self and in relationship with others”. Mary’s specialism is the development of ‘self in relation’.

As a counselling practitioner, Mary has worked in a range of contexts; GP surgeries; IAPT provision; EAP provision; student counsellor and working with the elderly living in residential care.

In addition to being a lecturer, Mary has been a key note speaker on Mental Health in Higher Education; spoken with young people on maintaining their mental well-being, and delivered organisation training on mental well-being in the workplace.

NWCH are delighted to have secured her services to deliver training on the often-taboo subjects of Loss and grief in pregnancy and birth. And supporting dads and new dads to cope with the pressures of parenthood

Her morning workshop will cover:

An exploration on the nature of loss and grief in pregnancy and birth, risk factors, stages of grief & mourning; therapeutic interventions

And her afternoon workshop:

An exploration of what it means to be a Dad or New Dad and the impact of such on Mental Well-being – The Landscape of Mental Well-being in Dads & New Dads

As a trainer, Mary likes to engage those she is working with in the learning process, so come prepared to be involved, to discuss, to engage and to be curious.
